They say that you can’t call yourself a driver until you’ve been involved in at least one accident. Well then, I’m definitely a driver. And unfortunately I was in the best car I’ve ever owned. It wasn’t my fault and, despite it being 6 years ago, I’ve never really gotten over it. But, life goes on. Not long afterwards I was testing replacement cars and it got me thinking that, unlike some people I’ve spoken with, I always treat cars that aren’t my own with the same (if not more) care. I’d imagine that if I go across the Pond on holiday and it comes to USA car hire I would be even more vigilant.
Wherever you are on the planet, whatever rules of the road and international variations of customs you come across, there is always a higher risk of you being involved in a collision of some sort. And, naturally there is always the chance that some idiot will crash into you. Of course you, as the driver, are more than capable of trashing your own wheels and sometimes this can be spectacular.
As a mixture of cautionary tale and light-hearted diversion I hope you will enjoy this look at some crazy and stupid car accidents.
At first glance this pic shows a car that has been overturned by its driver. Apart from the odd fact that it appears to be in the middle of an urban road and not an uneven, winding country road, it’s the billboard poster that makes me smile. ‘Ah, leuke verassing!’ is Dutch for ‘Nice surprise!’
I can’t even begin to think how this happened. If the car was facing the other way it would have made a bit more sense. I’m assuming the ladder was there to help the driver down.
I really feel sorry for the car owner in this one. It’s the last thing I would expect to find on my bonnet.
People can collide with the strangest of things. This chap has driven into what I think may be a ‘stop’ sign (my Russian is a bit rusty).

Oh my aching sides! This collision happened down in Kent, UK in one of the Cinque Ports towns (pronounced Sink Ports not the expected French Sank Ports).
The potholes are crazy in our town.
Finding a parking space nowadays is sooo hard.
The embarrassed cop must have been kicking himself after having his car towed back to the station. Mobile phones are a lot more cost effective than using the public phones.
Foundations are just as important as the structure you build on them whether it’s a house or a bit of hard standing.
I have no idea how this happened. I like how the passers-by appear to be ignoring the hanging car!
And finally, a lorry shedding its load across the carriageway is always bad but at least it deters tailgaters.
