Who Should Play Anastasia Steele in Fifty Shades of Grey

By now, everyone and their dog has heard of Fifty Shades of Grey. It’s the Mommy Porn book taking the world by storm. To be perfectly honest, I wasn’t a huge fan of the books but I can’t deny being a bit curious to see how the books look on the big screen. If you’ve been living under a rock, here’s a quick briefing on what Fifty Shades of Grey is about – mystery, attraction, sex and control. At the center of the story we have young Anastasia Steele, a young and innocent college student who sets off to do an interview for her roommate. The interview is with wealthy and mysterious Christian Grey – a gorgeous man who likes to be in control. Christian and Anastasia are mutually attracted to each other immediately, sparks fly and an affair is born. So with talk of the books being made into a movie, fans of the novels are waiting with baited breath to find out who will bring these two characters to life. I have some thoughts. Let me share them with you now. We’ll start with Anastasia.

Casting Anastasia Steele

While coming up with ideas for names to include on this list, I browsed a few other articles on the same subject. Some ideas really spoke to me. Others? Not so much. Let’s look at the usual suspects first and then talk about the women I would cast if I was behind the reins for this one.

The Usual Suspects

Kristen Stewart

I don’t love Kristen Stewart as Anastasia. She’s a talented actress and an attractive woman but career wise, I’m not sure it would be a wise step for her. With the Twilight Saga and the Snow Whitefranchise, I’m not sure another franchise would do her any favors. I’m also not entirely convinced she could pull of Anastasia’s innocent sort of vibe. There is just a natural darkness to Kristen that works well with some of her previous roles but I think it would really hinder her here.

Rooney Mara

Rooney Mara is a name you hear a lot when the conversation turn to who should play Anastasia Steele in Fifty Shades of Grey and it isn’t hard to imagine why. She’s a bold, beautiful and talented young actress who is clearly not afraid of taking chances with her career. I actually really love this casting idea but I’m not sure Rooney would choose to tackle this one so soon after The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Amber Heard

Amber Heard is a natural choice for Anastasia Steele. She’s beautiful, talented and isn’t afraid of a little controversy. I didn’t like much about The Playboy Clubbut I loved Amber’s performance in it. I think she’d be spectacular in the role but I’m not convinced she’d be willing to take it on. Regardless, if she did decide this was right for her, I think she’d be absolutely incredible.

Dianna Agron

I absolutely love the idea of Dianna playing Anastasia Steele. She’s beautiful, talented and desperately in need of a big film role to break away from Glee. While we have seen her on the big screen in films like Burlesque and Sucker Punch, neither film really established Dianna as a bankable star. While Fifty Shades of Greywill almost certainly be torn apart by critics, at the end of the day, flocks of people will still see it. I’d love it to see Dianna’s face front and center in this one.

Lily Collins

I’m just not sure how I feel about Lily playing Anastasia. I see her as almost too sweet and innocent. I’ve loved her in everything I’ve seen her in but I can’t picture her playing some of those racy sex scenes. While Anastasia needs to be innocent, the actress who portrays her also has to be able to convincingly pull off those hot and heavy moments and I just don’t know if Lily has the maturity to do that just yet.

Who I Would Consider for Anastasia Steele

Shay Mitchell

To be honest, I think any of the Pretty Little Liars could pull off Anastasia. Lucy Hale has already said she’d love to play the role and while I think she’d be a great fit for the part, I think I’d rather see Shay take it on. As Emily on Pretty Little Liars, she has the ‘innocent’ vibe down but she’d have to take it a step further for Fifty Shades of Grey. Aside from that, as my favorite Liar, I’d love to see Shay get a really big film role. I’d really like to see her career take off.

Emmy Rossum

Emmy Rossum might seem like an odd choice at first glance but I think she’d be absolutely perfect for this role. First, she’s amazing in Shameless. Second, she’s beautiful but has that sort of Anastasia innocence about her. I think she also has more than enough bite to really tackle this role and bring it to life. I think I’d choose Shay over Emmy, but it would be a close call.

Ellen Page

I adore everything about Ellen Page so of course I’d love to see her in something that’s sure to garner as much attention as Fifty Shades of Grey. Ellen is an incredibly talented young woman and I think it would be great to see her do something completely different than anything she’s done thus far. I also think she’d bring a little something extra to the character, something I really feel the character needs.

Mena Suvari

Mena Suvari has been one of my favorite actresses for a very long time. I think she has absolutely everything it would take to really bring Anastasia to life and make her a deep, exciting character. I think she has the guts to take a project like this on as well. I’m not sure some of the ladies in the “usual suspects” category do, nor do I think their managers would be in a hurry to help them land the roles. This is going to be a tricky project. It’s almost guaranteed to have a hard time making an R rating. I think Mena would be bold enough to tackle that.

Malin Akerman

I can’t describe in words how great I think Malin would be as Anastasia. She has a sweet and innocent look and I think she could play this character well. I also think it fits perfectly with the path she seems to be taking with her career. She is branching out into more mature, more controversial roles and for that reason alone, I think this would be a great choice for Malin and for the movie.

Okay, so that’s what I think about the possible casting choices for Anastasia in the Fifty Shades of Grey movie. Agree? Disagree? Make sure you let me know in the comments section below. You’ll also want to make sure you come back for my thought on casting choices for Christian Gray himself. Thanks for reading!
