The Voice Season 2: Meet the Teams

Last season, The Voice premiered and I was left feeling, well, a little underwhelmed by the whole thing. Sure it was an interesting idea but a good portion of the show just seemed to stretch out far too long and we weren’t really given the chance to get to know the contestants as people. This season? Well, it doesn’t really seem to be going that much differently although the talent is strong enough and there are enough interesting contestants to keep things interesting. Let’s meet those contestants

source: NBC

Team Adam

source: NBC

Angel Taylor

Age: 23
Hometown: Los Angeles, California
Audition Song: Adele – Somebody Like You
I absolutely love Adele. Covering her songs is a bit of a risk at this point because pretty much everyone knows them, loves them and holds up covers to the original. I liked Angel’s rendition but it didn’t floor me. Would I have turned my chair? Probably, but I’m not sure I would’ve fought hard for her. I think she could be a real shocker this season if Adam really does something with her though.

source: NBC

Chris Cauley

Age: 27
Hometown: Atlanta, Georgia
Audition Song: Bruno Mars – Grenade
I think Chris did a tremendous job on this song and I can’t wait to see what he does next time he hits the stage. I have to admit though, I’m writing this article after the final episode of Blind Auditions aired and I didn’t remember him at all. I think that has more to do with the song than it does Chris as an artist. He clearly has talent but at this point, being a fan of The X-Factor, American Idol and Glee, I’ve heard this song covered about a million times so it’s kind of hard to make it stand out.

source: NBC

Karla Davis

Age: 25
Hometown: Monroe, North Carolina
Audition Song: The Band Perry – If I Die Young
This song is one of my absolute favorites and American Idol’s Lauren Alaina covered it beautifully last season. This is my way of saying Karla’s performance didn’t really blow me away. Again, I think I can blame that one more on my familiarity with the song and other cover versions instead of on Karla’s talent as a singer. I guess time will tell.

source: NBC

Katrina Parker

Age: 34
Hometown: Hollywood, California
Audition Song: Joan Osborne – One of Us
I liked Katrina but I honestly wasn’t sure how I felt about her audition. I think her nerves really got the best of her to be perfectly honest and I think that impacted her performance in a big way. If Adam can help her get over those nerves, I think she’ll be a great contestant and someone I could really root for. Bit nervous for her in the battle rounds though.

source: NBC

Kim Yarbrough

Age: 50
Hometown: Los Angeles, California
Audition Song: Rufus and Chaka Khan – Tell Me Something Good
I didn’t like Kim’s audition as much as I thought I would but I do like Kim. She has so much confidence and charisma which really appeals to me. I like Kim’s voice and her stage presence. Pretty sure my issue with her audition had more to do with the song (which I loathe) than Kim herself, so I’m interested to see how I feel the next time she takes the stage.

source: NBC

Mathai

Age: 18
Hometown: Dallas, Texas
Audition Song: Adele – Rumor Has It
Mere moments ago, I wrote about Angel’s cover of Somebody Like You by Adele and mentioned how it’s hard to cover an Adele song and set yourself apart. Mathai did that for me. Her performance was very unique and full of personality. She took one of my favorite Adele songs and did something incredibly interesting with it. I like that a lot. I’m excited for Mathai. I think she could be a force to be reckoned with.

source: NBC

Nathan Parrett

Age: 23
Hometown: Unknown at time of publication
Audition Song: Steve Miller Band – The Joker
We didn’t see a whole lot of Nathan’s audition but I liked the little bit that I saw enough to check out the full studio version of iTunes. I’m a fan although I’m worried about how Nathan will fare in the battle rounds. He seems to be a very unassuming sort of person and the battle rounds are fierce. I guess we’ll see over the next few weeks.

source: NBC

Nicolle Galyon

Age: 27
Hometown: Sterling, Kansas
Audition Song: Keith Urban – You Save Me
I like the fact that Nicolle is trying to do something different but I’m not sure it’s the best fit for a show like The Voice. She really needs to work on her control but that definitely isn’t saying she doesn’t have talent. If I had to make a prediction, unless Adam really and truly believes in her, I’m not sure you’ll see her beyond the battle rounds. Keep in mind though, I didn’t have Scotty McCreery even making the top 24 on American Idol last year and he won the whole thing, so predictions really aren’t my strong suit.

source: NBC

Orlando Napier

Age: 25
Hometown: Los Angeles, California
Audition Song: John Mayer – Waiting on the World to Change
Love Orlando! I liked the spin he put on one of my favorite John Mayer songs although I really think he needs a little polish to really shine. I’m really looking forward to what he and Adam come up with together.

source: NBC

Pip

Age: 19
Hometown: Marietta, Georgia
Audition Song: The Animals – The House of the Rising Sun
So far, I’d have to say Pip is one of my absolute favorites. First, he’s freaking adorable. Second, his voice is out of this world. Third, his name is Pip and I think that’s fantastic. I think Pip has everything it takes to be a star and I’d be shocked – shocked – if he isn’t in this ‘til the very end. Also, did you know Pip was a finalist on The Glee Project? Now you do!

source: NBC

Tony Lucca

Age: 35
Hometown: Waterford, Michigan
Audition Song: Ray LaMontagne – Trouble
Tony Lucca took on a song that I would have to say is among my top ten favorite songs of all time and he completely nailed it. My one and only complain about Tony’s audition is the fact that they made such a big deal out of the Christina connection. Tony has tons of talent. Let that talent speak for itself. Please.

source: NBC

Whitney Myer

Age: 25
Hometown: Reno, Nevada
Audition Song: Alicia Keys – No One
I absolutely love Whitney. She took a song that I adore, put her own unique spin on it and did a fantastic job of it. I think Whitney has the makings of a real star although it will be interesting to see how that translates in the battle rounds. I look forward to seeing how she does.

source: NBC

Team Blake

source: NBC

Adley Stump

Age: 22
Hometown: Tulsa, Oklahoma
Audition Song: Carrie Underwood – Last Name
Sure Adley’s a little rough around the edges but it’s important to remember she’s only been singing seriously for a few months. I think with Blake’s attention and mentoring, she could really be something special. She definitely has the natural talent. It just needs to be refined a little bit. I think she’s on the perfect team.

source: NBC

ALyX

Age: Unknown at time of publication
Hometown: Unknown at time of publication
Audition Song: Pink – Just Like a Pill
We only saw a brief slip of ALyX’s performance on The Voice but I think she did a serviceable job of the song. I picked up the song on iTunes but I have to admit, it didn’t really do anything for me. I’m a big Pink fan and Just Like a Pill is a great song but I don’t really feel ALyX brought anything new to it. I’m interested to see where she’ll go from here. One thing though, the weird name spelling with the lower case letters and the caps? Not a fan. That’s just nitpicking though.

source: NBC

Brian Fuente

Age: 27
Hometown: Nashville, Tennessee
Audition Song: Grace Potter and The Nocturnals – Paris (Ooh La La)
It blows me away that Brian’s whole audition wasn’t aired because it was just frigging awesome. I’d put my money on this guy to not only stick around for a while in the competition – possibly even to the finals – but to have a long career after the show is done. He is the total package. If you haven’t seen his whole audition, definitely check it out. Worth it.

source: NBC

Charlotte Sometimes

Age: 23
Hometown: Wall, New Jersey
Audition Song: One Republic – Apologize
The moment Charlotte started singing, I knew she was really something special. By the end of her performance, I was a huge fan. Considering I’ve listened to the original version of this song roughly one million times and love it a little more each time, I’d have to say she did a fantastic version of it. I could see Charlotte and Brian being the last contestants standing on Team Blake. Should that happen, may the best performer win because I know I’m not going to choose.

source: NBC

Erin Willett

Age: 22
Hometown: Gaithersburg, Maryland
Audition Song: The Jackson 5 – I Want You Back
There is a lot of talent on the second season of The Voice and while that definitely makes the show more interesting, I do worry that some of my early favorites will be eliminated when the battle rounds roll around. This is my fear for Erin. She has a lot of talent and great stage presence but I’m not sure how she’ll fair against some of the other vocalists on Blake’s team or on the other teams should she make it through the battles.

source: NBC

Gwen Sebastian

Age: 37
Hometown: Hebron, North Dakota
Audition Song: Sugarland – Stay
I like Gwen’s dedication to music and I really wanted to like her audition but I guess it just wasn’t my cup of tea. I think she’s talented but as with so many other singers that made their way to a coach’s team, I’m not convinced we’ll see Gwen beyond the battle rounds. I do really like her though so I hope I’d wrong.

source: NBC

Jermaine Paul

Age: 33
Hometown: Orange County, New York
Audition Song: Avril Lavigne – Complicated
I don’t get how Jermaine made a team, in all honesty. Ducky didn’t but Jermaine did? Perhaps I just missed something. He was definitely intense and I loved his attitude after his audition – this is a guy that wants to win – and I even appreciated the passion he put into his performance but it just didn’t sound … good. Perhaps he’ll shut my mouth in the Battle Rounds.

source: NBC

Jordan Rager

Age: 17
Hometown: Loganville, Georgia
Audition Song: Zac Brown Band – Chicken Fried
To be honest, I don’t remember Jordan at all. I rewatched his audition on YouTube and I remembered it a bit more clearly but there was nothing really stand out about it for me. He’s definitely talented and there is a real sincerity in who he is when he hits the stage but I’m wondering how he’ll perform when he’s up against some of the other contestants on the show. With that said, he could definitely surprise me.

source: NBC

Jordis Unga

Age: 29
Hometown: Los Angeles, California
Audition Song: Paul McCartney – Maybe I’m Amazed
Jodis blew me away in her audition but it wasn’t the first time she’s had that impact on me on a reality singing competition. I remember Jordis from her time on Rock Star: INXS but I also think she’s grown tremendously as an artist since then. I can’t wait to see what she does on The Voice from here. I think she’ll impress a lot of people.

source: NBC

Lex Land

Age: 24
Hometown: Austin, Texas
Audition Song: Bonnie Raitt – I Can’t Make You Love Me
While I really think nerves for the best of Lex here and there during her audition, I think she has the talent to do something really special on the show. She’s a very unique performer and has an interesting quality to her voice I really hope Blake helps her do something with. I worry that she landed on the wrong team though, especially when it comes to the Battle Rounds.

source: NBC

Naia Kete

Age: 21
Hometown: Santa Monica, California
Audition Song: Bruno Mars – The Lazy Song
I want to start this one by stating two things – love Bruno Mars, hate this song. Those two things in mind, I was a little surprised by how much I loved Naia’s rendition of this tune. It was fun, unique and earned her a place on my favorite auditions list. I can’t wait to see where she goes in this competition. I think she’s on the perfect team.

source: NBC

RaeLynn

Age: 17
Hometown: Bayton, Texas
Audition Song: Miranda Lambert – Hell on Heels
Performing a Miranda Lambert song in front of Blake Shelton is a gutsy move and one that doesn’t always pay off (more than enough evidence of that was given last season). RaeLynn gave it a shot anyway, choosing to put a unique spin on the song – a gamble that really paid off. I love the original song and prefer it to RaeLynn’s cover but I definitely admire her guts and like her chances for the competition in the long run. She’s a talented girl.

source: NBC

Team Cee-Lo

source: NBC

Angie Johnson

Age: 31
Hometown: Saint Lewis, Missouri
Audition Song: Pat Benetar – Heartbreaker
Here’s the weird thing about Angie. I absolutely loved her performance. My husband didn’t care for it. It’s like we weren’t watching the same thing. Regardless, I love Angie’s story, her attitude and think she’s not only a talented vocalist but a talented performer as well. I think we’ll be seeing a lot more of her.

source: NBC

Cheesa

Age: 21
Hometown: Honolulu, Hawaii
Audition Song: Beyoncé – If I Were a Boy
Honestly, there wasn’t a thing I liked about Cheesa. Her personality was a little too over the top for me and I didn’t much care for her voice. That could definitely change though once Cee-Lo’s had a little time to work with her. I don’t think there’s a lack of talent there. It just needs to be refined a little bit.

source: NBC

Erin Martin

Age: 27
Hometown: Chicago, Illinois
Audition Song: Plain White T’s – Hey There Delilah
I know there are a whole lot of people out there who aren’t exactly feeling Erin for a wide variety of reasons but I am super loving this girl. She’s quirky, unique and has about the strangest voice I’ve heard in ages. Her confidence may chase some people away but it draws me in. This girl is a star all the way. My only question is whether or not she’ll be able to get viewers to vote to keep her around.

source: NBC

Jamar Rogers

Age: 29
Hometown: New York, New York
Audition Song: The White Stripes – Seven Nation Army
I’m not one for the whole back story thing. They’re always so over the top but Jamar’s really touched me. He seems to have such a positive outlook despite all he’s been through and more than that, he’s actually giving something back to the community. I was hoping his audition would be good and when he hit the stage, he delivered one of my absolute favorite auditions, totally rocking one of my favorite tunes in such a unique and awesome way. I consider him one of my favorites to win the whole thing.

source: NBC

James Massone

Age: 23
Hometown: Boston, Massachusetts
Audition Song: Drake – Find Your Love
There was a lot to like about James. He’s cute, talented and genuinely seemed surprised that even one judge turned their chair for him, let alone three of them. He needs to get over his nerves and be more confident in his abilities but if Cee-Lo is able to help him with that, I think James has what it takes to go a long way in this competition. He needs to help him fast though or the Battle Round will eat James alive.

source: NBC

Jamie Lono

Age: 22
Hometown: Chicago, Illinois
Audition Song: Johnny Cash – Folsom Prison Blues
On last season’s American Idol, Paul McDonald busted out a rendition of this song that stood as my favorite cover of the tune I’d ever heard … until Jamie came along. I absolutely loved everything about Jamie and about Jamie’s performance of this song. I think he and Cee-Lo are a perfect match and are going to bring something very special to the show.

source: NBC

Juliet Simms

Age: 25
Hometown: Florida
Audition Song: The Beatles – Oh! Darling
First things first, this is one of my favorite songs by The Beatles so I always get a little nervous when someone takes it on, especially someone I want so badly to be good. There’s something about Juliet I connected with before I even started singing. By the end of her performance I was a fan – a big fan – and I really think she has the talent to be somebody in the music industry.

source: NBC

Justin Hopkins

Age: 30
Hometown: Tigard, Oregon
Audition Song: David Gray – Babylon
I sometimes wonder if Carson has more say in who turns around than the show would have us believe but really, if I were a coach listening to Justin, I would’ve turned my chair so I guess that’s really a moot point here. Justin has a lot of potential and Cee-Lo could be the right judge to pull that potential out of him. I’m looking forward to see how his journey on the show progresses from here.

source: NBC

Sarah Golden

Age: 27
Hometown: Houston, Texas
Audition Song: Lady Gaga – You and I
I really wasn’t feeling Sarah but like so many of the other contestants who were chosen for teams this season, I think that had more to do with Sarah’s song choice than it did with her actual performance. I liked her version of this song (my favorite Gaga song, for the record) but I felt her voice was a little lackluster. Perhaps she’ll show me otherwise in the Battle Rounds.

source: NBC

Shields Brothers

Hometown: Rixeyville, Virginia
Audition Song: Billy Idol – Dancing with Myself
I liked these guys although I’m not sure how long they’ll be sticking around. They’re fun although perhaps a little bit cheesy and over the top. I don’t think they could’ve gotten a more perfect coach. While I’m not sure they’re in it for the long haul, I think they’re going to have a blast with Cee-Lo and produce something really interesting.

source: NBC

Tony Vincent

Age: 38
Hometown: New York, New York
Audition Song: Queen – We Are the Champions
I remember seeing clips of Tony on stage before The Voice although I can’t quite remember how or where. I just recall thinking he was incredibly talented. His cocky attitude bugs me but I think he and Cee-Lo are going to be magic together. I won’t lie. I’m excited to see what these two come up with.

source: NBC

Wade

Age: 19
Hometown: Harvest, Alabama
Audition Song: Amy Winehouse – Rehab
I’m a huge, huge Amy Winehouse fan and although Rehab isn’t my favorite Winehouse song, I do get a little concerned when people tackle in on shows like this one. It’s a big, nearly iconic song so doing it justice can be difficult. Wade did it justice and in a big way. I loved the twist he put on it. I can’t wait to see what Wade and Cee-Lo are going to create together.

source: NBC

Team Christina

source: NBC

Anthony Evans

Age: 33
Hometown: Dallas, Texas
Audition Song: Marvin Gaye – What’s Goin’ On
Love this song and loved Anthony’s performance of it. My husband, on the other hand, didn’t care much for it. I usually like to make my predictions based on what my husband and I think so I have to say I’m not terribly sure how Anthony is going to fare in the show but I think if anyone can help him polish his talent and really shine, it’s Christina.

source: NBC

Ashley De La Rosa

Age: 17
Hometown: Orlando, Florida
Audition Song: V. V. Brown – Shark In the Water
We didn’t see much of Ashley’s audition but I liked what I heard and like what I heard even more after picking up the single on iTunes. This girl is talented, unique and has what it takes to stand out. I wish more of her audition had been shown on the air. All the same, I think she could do really well this season if Christina guides her in the right direction.

source: NBC

Chris Mann

Age: 29
Hometown: Wichita, Kansas
Audition Song: Andrea Bocelli – Because We Believe (Ama Credi E Vai)
There is absolutely no rule that says an opera singer can’t cross over into pop. Just look at Josh Groban, Katherine Jenkins and Andrea Bocelli himself. If Chris is willing to let Christina guide him, I really think he has a huge amount of potential on this show. He definitely has a voice that could wow the crowd on the right song.

source: NBC

Geoff McBride

Age: 51
Hometown: Santa Rosa Beach, Florida
Audition Song: Stevie Wonder – Higher Ground
Blew my mind that not every chair turned for this guy – absolutely blew my mind. I love everything about Geoff. He’s charismatic, confident, knows how to work the stage and the crowd and can sing his butt off. I don’t know whether viewers will get behind him when it comes to voting but if I had my way, he’d have an instant pass to the finals on his audition alone. This is why I don’t have my way.

source: NBC

Jesse Campbell

Age: 42
Hometown: Maywood, Illinois
Audition Song: Leon Russell – A Song for You
There is nothing bad to say about Jesse. Landing him for her team was a huge win for Christina. I think Jesse has everything this competition needs and everything a contestant needs to take home a win. I can’t even wait to see what he and Christina can come up with together. He definitely chose the right coach.

source: NBC

Jonathas

Age: 23
Hometown: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Audition Song: Usher – U Got it Bad
I liked Jonathas but it was hard not to think he sounded a bit too much like Usher when he sang. I like a little originality – something different from my performers and I’m not sure Jonathas can offer that but I’m more than willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. I think he could do really well if he avoids singing the Usher tunes for a while.

source: NBC

Lee Koch

Age: 27
Hometown: Temecula, California
Audition Song: Bob Dylan – Like A Rolling Stone
Ah! I wanted to like this performance so badly. I just couldn’t. I know the song – another one of my favorites – but his performance was a little lacking. Was it nerves? Perhaps. I suppose only time will tell. I’m pretty interested to see his Battle Round performance.

source: NBC

Lindsey Pavao

Age: 22
Hometown: Sacramento, California
Audition Song: Trey Songz featuring Fabolous – Say Aah
My favorite female contestant this season by a mile. She reminds me a lot of Rebecca Loebe from last season who turned in one of the season’s most unique auditions with her rendition of Come As You Are. My hope is that Lindsey will be appreciated on Team Christina and will be given her shot to really be unique and original. This girl is an artist and I’m a fan for life, regardless of what happens on The Voice.

source: NBC

Monique Benabou

Age: 23
Hometown: Alameda, California
Audition Song: Kelly Clarkson – Mr. Know It All
I like Monique. She’s got a fantastic voice and really knows how to work the stage but her audition didn’t completely blow me away. I’m not sure that’s a good thing in a competition as tight as this one. She might have trouble coming out on top in a Battle depending on who she’s up against. I guess we’ll see.

source: NBC

Moses Stone

Age: Unknown at time of publication
Hometown: Unknown at time of publication
Audition Song: Black Eyed Peas – Let’s Get it Started
I’m not sure how an MC will do on a show like The Voice. It worked for Astro on The X-Factor for a while but I think he’s going to have a hard time in the Battle Rounds. I’m not sure there’s really any way a battle featuring Moses would be fair for him or for the performer he’s competing against. Even so, it’s nice to see something a little different and I hope he does well. He could really keep things interesting.

source: NBC

Sera Hill

Age: 24
Hometown: Atlanta, Georgia
Audition Song: Mary J. Blige – I’m Goin’ Down
I liked Sera a lot. She has a great voice and tons of personality although I have to admit, I found her interviews before and after her audition a tad bit irritating. The girl can talk – that’s for sure. I can blame that one on nerves though. Once she got on stage though, she was cool and collected, even when dueting with Coach Christina. I like her but I’m not sure about her longevity in the competition. There is a lot of incredible talent this year and it’s really going to be the unique performers that stand out. I’m not sure Sera is that performer.

source: NBC

The Line

Hometown: Nashville, Tennessee
Audition Song: Tom Petty – American Girl
I think these girls are extremely talented and have, as the coaches sometimes say, the complete package. I’m just not sure a duo really has much of a chance in this competition when all is said and done. I have my fingers crossed for these too though. I’d really like to see America have the chance to vote for them.

Of course, while the talent that made the cut is incredible (for the most part), there are a few contestants I really feel should’ve made the cut. I’ll keep this part brief but I really feel they need to be mentioned, so here are my favorite performers that didn’t get the chairs to turn (in alphabetical order)

  • Neal Middleton – 33 from Salt Lake City, Utah. Neal performed I Heard it Through the Grapevine by Marvin Gaye
  • Dez Duron – 21 from Shreveport, Louisiana. Dez performed I Want It That Way by The Backstreet Boys
  • Hoja Lopez – 25 from Houston, Texas. Hoja performed Teenage Dream by Katy Perry
  • Elly Duhe – 19 from Vancleave, Mississippi. Elly performed Mercy by Duffy
  • Ducky – 26 from Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Ducky performed Tighten Up by The Black Keys and should’ve made someone’s team. Pissed about this one.
  • Preston Shannon – 64 from Memphis, Tennessee. Preston performed In the Midnight Hour by Wilson Pickett and it was absolutely phenomenal. The show suffers for not having him move forward.

Who are you rooting for this season? Who are you sad the coaches let go? Let me know in the comments section below!
