Summer Hair Care Tips

When the first summer rays come out behind the clouds, we all know that we should grab our sunscreen and shades to protect ourselves from the sun. But there is one thing we always tend to forget: our hair. We spend so much time on making a hairstyle – making sure that our beach waves are just perfect – but we need to ask ourselves: is our hair healthy? The sun can damage it a lot more than we think, and split ends and dry, dull hair will never look good. But how can we protect our hair from the sun? Here are a few tips to get you started:

It comes from within

It’s no secret that how we look like on the outside reflects how we feel on the inside, but it also means that we can take certain steps to take care of our bodies which will ensure the best odds for our hair. The first and most important one – stay hydrated. When your body is not properly hydrated, it shows: your hair will be dry and will be a lot more prone to split ends and even falling out. You should hydrate in the summer heat anyway, so this should not be a problem. The second thing you can improve is your diet. Eat a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables and make sure you are getting all the calcium you need to strengthen your hair and keep it looking fabulous.

Keep it out of direct sunlight

You might think that your hair will only become lighter after too much sun exposure but, in reality, you are causing serious damage to it. Direct rays of sun damage and dry out your hair, so you’d be doing yourself a favor if you keep it safe. And there are a lot more ways to do that than simply putting on a huge hat – even though that can often be a good and fashionable option. Anything from a bandana to a straw hat will work, as long as your hair is covered. By covering your head you also reduce the risk of heatstroke, so if you can’t find a way to cover your hair when it’s hot, at least try to keep it moist. Try to keep your head in the shade whenever you can and don’t worry – you can get a tan while you’re in the shade too!

Use the right products

The products you use on a day-to-day basis play a major role in the quality of your hair. Make sure you are using a high-quality shampoo and conditioner, but keep in mind that this is not where the list ends. If you feel like your hair needs a real pick-me-up, apply a Schwarzkopf hair mask and leave it to soak in and feed your hair. And if you are going to the beach or anywhere else where your hair will be exposed to direct sun for a long time, make sure you apply a heat-protection spray. As far as dyes go, don’t be surprised if your hair becomes lighter after some time in the sun. Ask your hairdresser for advice before your next coloring session, because they might recommend using a different brand or color that will stand the test of spending time in the sun.

No matter what length, color or natural quality your hair is, we all need to pay extra attention to our hair during the summer and treat it well, giving it a boost whenever we feel like it is getting dry and brittle. Healthy hair will always look good and you deserve to have the best hair possible during any season.
