I’m going to start this one off by being very honest. I was a little surprised to see all the love for Alex O’Loughlin in last week’s poll. I had a hunch he might get a few votes after my “100 Hottest Men on Television: 2011” list and I wasn’t even terribly surprised he won. What I didn’t expect was his total domination of the poll. It’s not that I don’t find Alex absolutely beautiful – he obviously is. I suppose it was really a matter of underestimating just how big his fan base has grown. It’s awesome to see because I love this man more than chocolate cream pies. It’s good to know I’m not alone on this one.

I first fell in love with Alex back in 2005 when I saw him in the television mini-series, The Incredible Journey of Mary Bryant. Alex was strong, masculine and absolutely gorgeous. He also had some serious acting chops. Since then, I’ve followed his career pretty closely, watching anything and everything that he was a part of. I was never disappointed. Sure he’s been in projects I didn’t love but I always loved Alex in his role. He’s talented, sexy and woefully underrated. I’m thrilled to get to do this profile so I can give Mr. O’Loughlin a little more of the attention he so clearly deserves.

The Shield is one of my all time favorite shows. Gritty, honest and brutal in all the best ways, The Shield was really the show that got me watching television again. It was real story telling without the need for a shiny, happy Hollywood ending. It was the first show that taught me you don’t have to love the characters to love a series. I started watching from the pilot and was well addicted to the show by the time I heard Alex would be making a seven episode appearance. When his character, Kevin Hiatt made his first appearance, I knew I wasn’t going to be disappointed. One of my favorite actors on one of my favorite shows? Yes, definitely a win all around.

Let’s fast forward to 2010. I heard about a reboot of Hawaii Five-0 and wrote it off as another crappy remake of a classic television series. Then I heard one of my favorite former Lost stars, the beautiful and talented Daniel Dae Kim, would be playing a role and decided the whole thing required a little more investigation. Scott Caan? Yes, please! The last cast member I heard about? Mr. Alex O’Loughlin. I knew I’d be tuning in. Alex is fabulous on the show and his chemistry with his cast mates is a huge part of the reason the show works so well. I won’t say it’s my favorite show on television but it’s definitely entertaining and as long as its on the air, I’ll be tuning in.

So I guess this is the part where I talk about why I love Alex O’Loughlin. I guess I’d have to say it’s really a combination of a lot of things. His talent is a huge selling point. While Alex is absolutely gorgeous and has a body that makes me weak in the knees, he’s a lot more than just his looks. He’s a terrific actor that can make you believe whatever character he’s portraying. Watching Alex at work isn’t like watching an actor play a role. The role becomes real life and you care about what he does and says. You care about what happens to him. When Steve gets stabbed on Hawaii Five-0 I genuinely felt fear for the character even though I was certain he would survive. That’s the mark of a real actor.

There’s something inherently masculine about Alex O’Loughlin. He’s a real man’s man – rugged, handsome and tough. I like a nice clean cut guy from time to time but my heart belongs to the rough boys. I love a man that isn’t afraid to get dirty or pose for a picture with his hair a little messy. In fact, the messier the better. Aside from all of that, Alex is Australian and I have a serious soft spot for Aussies. It’s kind of a thing with me. In summary, Alex is pretty damn close to my ideal man and it has been an absolute pleasure to do this profile on him. Thanks for writing in his nomination and voting him to victory!

Before we get to the gallery, I want to take a moment to talk about the voting process. I love the support we’ve been getting over the last few weeks. You can head over to Girl In Stereo to see a full run down of last week’s voting results and to learn more about who you can vote for this week. As always, write-in votes are welcome. I ask only two things. Please make sure your write in nominee has not already been featured. There’s a list at the bottom of this post of past winners and also below the poll on Girl in Stereo. Second, if you’re nominating someone, try to spell their name correctly, or at least so I can understand who you mean. It would help me out a whole lot. Remember, you can vote directly by clicking here or by visiting the Meet the Candy Candidates post on Girl in Stereo by clicking here. You can vote as often as you like, it’s completely free and you don’t have to enter any information other than the candidate you’re voting for. Pretty simple. Anyway, enough talk. Let’s get to the reason you’re all here – the pictures! Enjoy!
