A battle between popcorn and healthy food

Popcorn and juice served at the cinema are among the unhealthiest snacks, by number of calories and amount of saturated fat content, according to a study made in American cinemas by the Center for Science in the Public Interest and quoted by AFP.

The average menus with popcorn and juice sold in the largest U.S. cinema chain, Regal, contain not less than 1610 calories, meaning more than three Big Mac hamburgers, and 60 grams of saturated fat, according to the study. This not taking into account the liquid butter which is added by the Americans on their popcorn adding 130 calories with each teaspoon, informs Mediafax.

The second U.S. cinema chain, AMC, has smaller menus, but a large portion of popcorn still has 1030 calories and 57 grams of saturated fat, the equivalent of 500 grams of pork ribs and a cup of ice cream.

The ratio of saturated fat – which favors the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases- which can be found  in popcorn is determined by the oil used for their preparation, particularly coconut oil.

The juice sold in American movie theaters are also considered in the study. Thus, at the Regal, the smallest non-dietetic juice has 300 calories and the biggest, a liter and a half, has 500 calories – the equivalent of 33 teaspoons of sugar.

Neither sweets are healthy, too. A pack of 225 grams of colored chocolate candies contains 1160 calories and 35 grams of saturated fat, the equivalent of 500 grams of steak with potatoes and butter, baked.
