7 Top Famous Porn Stars

Linda Lovelace

Mainstream audiences will be forever grateful to Linda Lovelace, who first brought deep-throating to general cinemas via the 1972 porn masterpiece Deep Throat. Linda’s story is not all too happy, however. She claims to have become a mother at twenty, to a child she had to give away. She was involved in a major car crash followed by a blood transfusion soon thereafter, and eventually ended up being pimped out by Chuck Traynor, who also got her involved in a lesser known porn hit of the ‘70s, Dog Fucker, a bestiality flick alternatively dubbed Dogorama. Linda eventually met a choreographer, who determined her to quit porn. From then onward she only did two softcore films. Unfortunately, however, she had already become a hardcore drug addict. She eventually died in 2002, after yet another serious car crash, which caused her internal injuries.

Rocco Siffredi

Rocco Siffredi is handsome and versatile, in porn star terms. He’s done both plot-based flicks, and gonzo-style sex movies. He engages in rough sex strategies such as spanking, spitting, hair pulling, but also has no problem whatsoever with placing himself in a submissive position, while acting in erotic bondage and domination scenes. The married father of two went on a hiatus in 2004 (then announced as a permanent withdraw from the porn scene), but returned in 2009. He’s also made several notable appearances in mainstream media, including work for TV, feature-length films and a commercial for potato chips, which, however, was considered too controversial and was eventually pulled off the air.

Marilyn Chambers

What started out innocently enough for Marilyn Chambers, eventually lead to a pornographic career. In the 70s, Marilyn was the rather recognizable face of the Ivory Snow brand of detergent, but also a struggling actress constantly on the lookout for new work. She was more than excited to respond to a casting call for a 1972 film called Behind the Green Door, but just as eager to walk out the door, once she learned the film was going to be porn. However, the producers recognized her as the “99 & 44/100% Pure” girl, depicted as holding a baby on the Ivory Snow box, and convinced her to take on the part (by also flattering her for her resemblance to then-household name Cybill Shepherd). The film was the first one in porn history to feature an interracial sex scene, which caused heaps of controversy. Procter & Gamble, which owned the Ivory Snow brand, dropped Chambers like a hot potato. Chambers went on to have a successful career in pornography, with breaks and hiatuses during her attempts to crossover into the mainstream. She eventually left porn for good in the early 80s, amid growing concerns with the risks of AIDS. She fared mildly successfully as a theater actor and singer, made a highly publicized and failed attempt at running for vice-president and was eventually found dead from a brain hemorrhage in her home, at the age of 56.

Ron Jeremy

Ron Jeremy is definitely quite a character. He is the son of a middle class Jewish family in the Bronx and worked as a special education teacher before realizing he had quite some sexual prowess, which only the adult film industry could put to good use. He is literally able to perform self-fellatio and claims he never uses Viagra, unlike many of his industry colleagues. He has appeared in over 2,000 porn flicks and is possibly the most prolific male star out there. Jeremy is hairy and, as of late, quite chubby, yet he still acts in, produces and directs porn. His staying power is possibly explicable for his mainstream success. Mainstream media appearances include minor roles and cameos in A-list movies such as The Boondock Saints and Boogie Nights, a documentary on him (Porn Star: The Legend of Ron Jeremy) and several appearances on reality TV shows and B-series films.

Traci Lords

Traci Lords is no exception to the rule which says porn stars usually come from pretty disturbing backgrounds. She was born in Ohio in 1968, raped by the age of ten and a runaway from home at twelve. She, her mother and three sisters tried to escape Traci’s abusive and alcoholic father, but ended up no better. Her mother’s new boyfriend turned out to be a drug dealer and molester, who eventually prompted Traci to do porn at fifteen and pose naked for Penthouse at sixteen (they used a forged driver’s license which said Lords was twenty at the time). By the time Traci turned eighteen, the media and the authorities caught on to the fact that she was underage, and a major scandal and highly publicized trial ensued. By nineteen, Lords had quit the industry, taken up method acting and gone on to star in several B-list films. She is now the mother of a four-year old boy and has published an autobiography which made it to the New York Times’ bestseller list. She refuses to appear naked in films, though she has performed characters loosely based on her actual story, most recently in the comedic release Zack and Miri Make a Porno.

John Holmes

John Holmes’s story is possibly the typical porn-star-gone-bad story. He was born in Ohio, in 1944 and then set out for a life that announced itself as un-extraordinary by all accounts. He came from a troubled family, decided to join the army and got married. Then, suddenly, while peeing in a bathroom at a bar, a photographer noticed his gigantic penis and advised him to go into porn. And indeed he did, having gone on to star in well over 2,500 films, sleeping with no less than 3,000 women and several men. He was a legend in his own rights in the porn industry of the 1970s and 80s—that is, until cocaine got the best of him. Soon Holmes discovered he couldn’t kick the habit, and instead chose to offer both himself and his girlfriend up for paid sexual intercourse with men, women and couples. He dealt drugs, got in with the wrong crowd (which, obviously, involved several dangerous gangs in Los Angeles) and ended up dying with complications from AIDS. According to his own accounts, he never used needles while taking drugs, so it is most likely he contacted the disease during an unprotected sex scene with a fellow male actor at some point in the 1980s. Holmes’s story is somewhat well-known nowadays, as it was presented in feature length form in the hit movie Boogie Nights, as well as Wonderland. A documentary, Wadd – The Life and Times of John C. Holmes.

Jenna Jameson

Without a doubt, Jenna Jameson is the most famous porn star in the world, mostly thanks to her own adult entertainment company, ClubJenna, which she founded in 2000 with former husband Jay Grdina. She has starred in video games, as well as in Howard Stern’s mainstream film Private Parts. The film boosted her popularity as a porn star, but also enabled her to appear on TV shows, have cameos in non-pornographic movies, as well as eventually launch her website, which is currently evaluated at $30 million. Not bad for a girl whose mother died of cancer before she had turned two. The bankrupted family was then forced to live in trailer parks around the country. Jenna claims she was gang raped by four boys at fourteen, and then assaulted a second time by her uncle at sixteen. She eventually fled for Las Vegas, where she performed as an exotic dancer and posed nude. Once she had kicked her LSD and cocaine addiction, in 1995, she went on to star in her first hardcore film, in 1995. Nowadays, Jenna models, does TV and public appearances, while also managing ClubJenna. She has retired from acting.
